Celebration: Turn Gratitude into Action
Gratitude has profound health effects - lifting depression, increasing energy and optimism, and helping soothe your nervous system. Instead of fight-or-flight, gratitude helps you calm and connect. Do you rejoice in the presence of others, savor each day for the good in it, let others know how much you appreciate them?
Try this simple exercise: Make a celebration visit - either on the phone or in person. Write a thank-you letter to someone in your life for whom you feel genuine gratefulness. Let them know just how and why they've helped you and talk about their courage, constancy, loyalty, kindness, intelligence, persistence, caring - any quality of theirs worth celebrating. Read them this letter and then bask in the feeling of connection and joy between you. This remarkably simple exercise can be done again and again, and you will find it very healing.
