Prevalence of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Among US Gulf War Veterans

by Author: Hans K. Kang et al.
February 1, 1999

A two-part study conducted by Hans K. Kang et. al. surveyed a large based population of over 15,000 veterans to obtain information regarding their exposures, the presence of various symptoms, and medical and psychological conditions. With an overall response rate of 70%, researchers found approximately 5.1% of Gulf War Veterans and 1.2% of Gulf era veteran controls met the requirement for CFS. The risk of CFS was significantly higher among whites versus non-whites and ground troops (Army and Marines) versus Non-ground troops. Those who served in the military reserves also had a significantly higher incidence than the regular units. This survey suggests that CFS may account for a significant portion of Gulf Veterans who complained of medically unexplained symptoms.
