Who says you can't fight city hall? Despite the Utah State Bureau of Epidemiology giving the city of Farmington its seal of approval, the health department will proceed with a study to evaluate abnormal rates of cancer, neurological illness and chronic fatigue syndrome.
The study is a direct result of citizen concern regarding 21 cases of cancer reported in a 2 ½ block area in Farmington. Speculation is that chemicals used in nurseries in the area could be responsible for higher than usual rates of not only cancer, but chronic fatigue syndrome and other neurological illnesses in the area. The study will continue through March 31, 2001, with more epidemiological studies conducted if research in this study confirms the residents' hypotheses.
News of this study is timely inspiration for all who suffer from CFIDS. It reminds us that we CAN make a difference and our actions CAN incite government action. There is no better opportunity to use your voice than International Awareness Day on May 12.
