Personal contact from voters who care about CFIDS is the secret weapon in the CFIDS advocacy arsenal. To facilitate contact with elected officials, The CFIDS Association of America sponsors an annual Washington, D.C. Lobby Day event. The next Lobby Day will be held March 20-21, 2002.
Each year, CFIDS advocates from around the country, including persons with CFIDS (PWCs) and their family members and friends, come together on Capitol Hill on a single day to personally educate Congress about CFIDS and ask for help in securing an improved federal response to the illness. Lobby Day participants are trained on effective meeting strategies and provided with materials to share with elected officials so they will feel confident and prepared before their first meeting.
The CFIDS Association of America's 2002 Awareness Day information packet is now available on the Web. PWCs, their family and friends can use the information as a guide when developing awareness activities in their local area. Resources provided in the packet include:
* Suggestions for May 12 advocacy and media activities, including guidelines for developing a proclamation
* Tips on how to approach the media, sample letter to reporters and May 12 press release
* CFIDS fact sheet and results from a recent medical survey that can be included with advocacy and media letters
