  • Small Heart Syndrome in Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – Source: Clinical Cardiology, July 2008
In this study, small heart syndrome was more prevalent in CFS patients (61%) than the control group (24%). Researchers hypothesize it "may contribute to the development of CFS as a constitutional factor predisposing to fatigue, and may be included in the genesis of CFS." [Source: Clinical Cardiology, July 2008]
  • 07/21/08
  • Speed of Mental Operations in Fibromyalgia: A Selective Naming Speed Deficit - Source: Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, Jul 17, 2008
"Abnormalities in naming speed are an unappreciated feature of FMS...Clinicians would be wise to specifically request adding a rapid naming test to document cognitive dysfunction in FMS patients who otherwise appear to test normally, despite often intense complaints of memory and concentration difficulties that can affect job performance and increase disability.” [Source: Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, Jul 17, 2008]
  • 07/19/08
  • Cardiorespiratory fitness and brain atrophy in early Alzheimer disease - Source: Neurology, July 2008
Increased cardiorespiratory fitness is linked to less brain atrophy in early Alzheimer disease and may moderate a common underlying process that affects both brain atrophy and fitness. [Source: Neurology, July 2008]
  • 07/18/08
  • The relationship between fibromyalgia and major depressive disorder: A comprehensive review – Source: Current Medical Research and Opinion, July 2008
There clearly is insufficient evidence to suggest FM is a form of somatic or masked depression. Overlap is limited and neurobiological studies show important differences as well as some similarities. The full text - available free online - includes 144 footnotes, comparative tables, and a review of antidepressant trial results for FM. [Source: Current Medical Research and Opinion, July 2008]
  • 07/18/08
  • Increase in prefrontal cortical volume following cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome – Source: Brain, June 28, 2008
Researchers - who previously found reduced grey matter volume in ME/CFS patients vs. controls - report a volume increase in the lateral prefrontal cortex of patients whose cognitive speed improved with CBT. They believe this is an “example of macroscopic cortical plasticity in the adult human brain, demonstrating a surprisingly dynamic relation between behavioral state and cerebral anatomy.” - Source: Brain, June 28, 2008
  • 07/18/08
  • Simvastatin vs therapeutic lifestyle changes and supplements: Randomized primary prevention trial - Source: Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Jul 2008
Four-month comparison of ‘bad’ cholesterol-lowering results with statin drugs vs. a combo of fish oil & red yeast rice found equivalent benefit - indicating the nutrients are a “promising” alternative for patients who can’t or don’t wish to take statin drugs. [Source: Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Jul 2008]
  • 07/17/08
  • Medication-induced mitochondrial damage and disease – Source: Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, July 2008
Dysfunctional mitochondria (the cells’ energy-generators) play a role in migraine, nerve pain, ME/CFS, FM, and many more illnesses, and antioxidant therapies hold promise. This article explains how the mitochondria function, and how many common types of medications are known to damage them. [Source: Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, July 2008]
  • 07/17/08
  • Physical fitness in postmenopausal women with Fibromyalgia - Source: International Journal of Sports Medicine, May 2008
Exercise physiologists report fatigue has a more severe impact than pain for FM women. They reach physical exhaustion at a lower heart rate than controls; have less strength in legs. Suggest rehab focus on muscle performance for quality of life. Source: International Journal of Sports Medicine, May 2008.
  • 07/17/08
  • Fecal Microbiota in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis - Source: Journal of Rheumatology, Jun 2008
Intestinal bacteria of early RA patients vs. other chronic pain patients with fibromyalgia “supports the hypothesis that intestinal microbes participate in the etiopathogenesis of RA” - Finds fewer probiotics, dramatic differences in RA group. [Source: Journal of Rheumatology, Jun 2008]
  • 07/17/08
  • Hippocampus Dysfunction May Explain Symptoms of Fibromyalgia Syndrome. A Study with Single-Voxel Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy - Source: Journal of Rheumatology, July 2008
The hippocampal function abnormalities these researchers found in FM patients may be related to problems. Cognitive function, sleep regulation, and pain perception are all functions affected by the hippocampus. [Source: Journal of Rheumatology, May 15 2008]
